Specialties of Our Practice

Minimally Invasive Surgery

It is our mission to provide the highest quality services for our patients using the most up-to-date technology. We have advanced training in minimally invasive surgeries, such as laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH), laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (LSH), and total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH). The benefits of using advanced, minimally invasive technology are reducing pain, speeding recovery, minimizing hospitalization, and eliminating the need for abdominal incisions. We also offer several procedures in the comfort of our office, including the following:

  • Permanent sterilizations ( Essure®)
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Endometrial ablation
  • LEEP (Loop electrosurgical excision procedure)
  • Urodynamic studies

We are extremely committed to providing superior patient care. Our staff strives to make your visit as convenient and as comfortable as possible.

About Sacral Nerve Stimulation

If you’ve tried other treatments without relief, you may want to consider a trial assessment for sacral nerve stimulation. It has been used to treat more than 50,000 people worldwide since 1994.

What Is It?

The InterStim® neurostimulator is a surgically implanted device that stimulates your sacral nerve with mild electrical pulses. The sacral nerve controls your bladder and the muscles related to urinary function.

To help discover if sacral nerve stimulation will work for you, Medtronic has created a trial assessment. You and your doctor can try sacral nerve stimulation without making a big commitment. The trial assessment involves placement of a thin wire worn in your back. The wire is connected to a small stimulator, which you'll wear on a belt. The stimulator will send mild electrical pulses through the thin wire to one of your sacral nerves, and those pulses may get your bladder working the way it's supposed to. During the trial assessment, which typically lasts 3 to 7 days, you can continue many of your daily activities with caution.

Our Bladder Control Products

The InterStim neurostimulator is a small implantable device that sends mild electrica l impulses to the sacral nerve. The neurostimulator contains a battery and electronics to create these impulses.

Benefits and Risks

Sacral nerve stimulation may offer several benefits, including freedom from the embarrassment of leaks, and more restful sleep without waking to urinate. Side effects may include pain, skin irritation, infection, device problems, and lead movement. These conditions were generally resolved in a clinical study.

Outpatient Laproscopic Hysterectomy

The LSH procedure uses a thin, lighted telescope-like instrument called a laparoscope, which acts like a video camera, along with small surgical instruments that are all inserted through 3 to 4 tiny incisions (less than 1/4 inch each) in the navel and abdomen. Using the instruments, the surgeon carefully separates the uterus from the cervix and removes it through one of the openings. The cervix, the bottom part of the uterus, is left intact. Because this type of surgery does not require the surgeon to make a large abdominal incision, you will not have the same kind of visible scar typical with most traditional, "open" surgeries.

LSH causes less stress to the body than the traditional "open" hysterectomy. It was developed to reduce pain, minimize scarring, and shorten recovery time. The procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, which means a woman can be home resting comfortably within 24 hours and back to her normal activities in less than a week. As with all surgery, hysterectomy involves risk, including potential blood loss, infection and damage to other internal organs.

Risks:

Laparascopic hysterectomy is an elective procedure, where potential risks include those typically associated with laparascopic surgical procedures, including injury to organs or vessels, and the possibility of converting to open surgery. Consult your physician to explore all options.

Vaginal Sling for Stress Urinary Incontinence

Monarc™ Subfascial Hammock

The Monarc™ Subfascial Hammock treats female stress urinary incontinence by placing a narrow strip of mesh in your body to support the urethra. The Monarc uses what is called a transobturator approach to place the supportive mesh. The transobturator approach avoids the retropubic space, the area of loose connective tissue between the bladder, pubic bone and abdominal wall. With this approach, narrow mesh carriers are passed through an area near the groin at the obturator of the pubic bone. The mesh is then attached and pulled into place under the urethra.

Once placed, the hammock cradles your urethra and gives it a point of support.

Most patients are continent immediately following the procedure and can resume normal, non-strenuous activities within a few days.

Benefits

The Monarc offers several benefits:

  • Patients generally recover quickly and experience immediate continence.
  • It is minimally invasiv e and suitable for a wide variety of patients.
  • Incisions in the groin area are small.
  • Can be used in patients who have retropubic scarring resulting from prior pelvic surgery.
  • The hammock can be loosened or tightened during and immediately after the procedure.

MiniArc™ Single-Incision Sling

The MiniArc™ Single-Incision Sling is the latest generation of sling solutions from AMS, offering a less invasive approach to correcting urine leakage. Unlike other procedures, the MiniArc requires just one incision to surgically place a small narrow strip of mesh material - called a sling - under the urethra to give it more support and prevent accidental urine leakage.

MiniArc's many benefits include:

  • A single-incision approach that reduces the potential for pain
  • Procedure uses a smaller implant and is faster to perform than traditional sling surgeries
  • Outpatient procedure that can be done under local anesthesia
  • Use of proven AMS mesh that facilitates healing

Sling procedures require surgery and are not recommended for everyone, especially if you are pregnant, or have blood coagulation disorders, a compromised immune systems, renal insufficiency or upper urinary tract obstruction. Inflammation and irritation may occur after surgery. Future pregnancies may cause you to become incontinent again. You should talk with your doctor about benefits and risks before moving forward with any treatment option.

Reduction Labioplasty

Reduction Labioplasty can sculpture the elongated or unequal labial minora (small inner lips) according to ones specification. Most women tell us that they do not want the small inner lips to project beyond the large outer lips. Many women bring us Playboy and say that they want to look like this. With laser reduction labioplasty, we can accomplish the desires of the woman. Our labioplasty techniques can also reconstruct conditions that are due to the aging process, childbirth trauma, or injury.
