Gynecology Q & A

What gynecological services are offered?

Every woman should take preventive gynecological care seriously to maintain their overall health. It’s important to see your gynecologist every year. Dr. Haddad offers many common gynecological services, including:

  • Pap smears
  • HPV screening and treatment
  • STD testing
  • Management of irregular vaginal bleeding

Even if you don’t have any symptoms, it’s recommended to undergo preventive testing every year or so. Your dedicated provider ensures that your preventive checkup is completed with minimal discomfort.

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is a diagnostic test to determine whether you have the early signs of cervical cancer. Because cervical cancer is very common and very treatable in early stages, it’s important to get a Pap smear test every three years after you turn 21.

During the procedure, a speculum is inserted into your vagina to allow for a visual exam of your cervix. Your provider takes a sample of cervical cells to test for abnormalities. Although you may experience some discomfort during your first Pap smear, most women don’t experience pain.

When do I need an STD test?

If you’re sexually active, it’s important to get tested regularly for sexually transmitted disease (STD) to make sure you’re staying healthy and STD-free. STD tests determine whether you’ve been exposed to common infections, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Herpes
  • Genital warts
  • Gonorrhea
  • HIV

STD tests are quick and simple, and usually involve either a blood or urine test, or a cheek swab or physical examination.  Dr. Haddad and the knowledgeable staff also counsel you on the best ways to avoid STDs and to stay safe during intercourse.

What is abnormal vaginal bleeding?

While it’s normal for women of reproductive age to have monthly periods, some women may experience extensively heavy or off-cycle bleeding that can point to medical problems. If you’re experiencing vaginal bleeding between your periods or after menopause, you may have one of the following conditions:

  • Fibroids
  • Polyps
  • Side effects of hormonal birth control
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine cancer

Your provider can diagnose the cause of your abnormal vaginal bleeding and help you get your menstrual cycle back on track.
