What is a 3D ultrasound?

You’re probably familiar with a standard 2D ultrasound – which uses high-frequency soundwaves to create a 2D black and gray image of your developing fetus during pregnancy. Dr. Haddad may also use a 2D ultrasound to help diagnose gynecologic conditions, such as ovarian cysts.

A 3D ultrasound uses a similar approach to take multiple 2D images from different angles. Advanced computer imaging technology then combines the multiple views to create a 3D representation of your baby that looks more like a regular photo.

What is a 4D ultrasound?

A 4D ultrasound strings together a series of images to create a video. You can watch your unborn baby do things in real-time, including sucking their thumb and opening their eyes. You may even get to see your baby smile for the first time in a 4D ultrasound!

How safe are 3D and 4D ultrasounds?

As with other types of ultrasound, there are no known risks from 3D or 4D ultrasounds for pregnant women. However, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends pregnant women only have an ultrasound when medically necessary and under the care of a qualified medical professional, such as Dr. Haddad.

Many prenatal portrait studios offer 3D and 4D ultrasounds, but these places aren’t staffed by the medical team monitoring your pregnancy. Dr. Haddad ensures your ultrasound procedure follows safety standards and advises you on any medical issues the images may reveal.

Why should I get a 3D or 4D ultrasound?

If you have a low-risk, complication-free pregnancy, there’s not a medical need for you to have more than two standard 2D ultrasounds throughout your pregnancy. However, many parents opt to get a 3D/4D ultrasound to have a keepsake of their baby.

In cases of high risk pregnancies, or potential anomalies or birth defects (such as spinal cord issues or a cleft palate) your OBGYN may recommend a 3D or 4D ultrasound to closely monitor and examine your baby in the womb as he or she develops.
